Women have been getting pregnant and giving birth since the dawn of mankind. And yet, once the announcement that a bun is in the oven comes out, you’re treated like a rose. There’s no keeping away the nearby maid and grandma from offering any kind of guidance, including unwelcome suggestions on how to take care of yourself while you’re pregnant.
Our world today is witnessing women pushing the boundaries of what is possible while pregnant. This year, while breastfeeding for 8 weeks (in the so-called most vulnerable 1st trimester), Serena Williams captured the Australian Open. Long-distance runner Alysa Montano ran the 800 m in the U.S. Track and Field Championships while pregnant for 34 weeks and even here in India, more and more women spend the exalted 9 months in the gym.
Avoid smoking and tobacco infested areas, drugs, and if you eat meat, ensure that it is properly cleaned and cooked during your pregnancy. Only pasteurized dairy products are recommended. Avoid soft and deli cheeses as salmonella poisoning is likely to occur. If you love your coffee, you might want to cut it down to 2 cups a day!
Special note for pet-mummies: avoid handling pet litter, if possible.
